Whole-Home Design-Build in Ann Arbor: How DreamMaker Transforms the Way You Live

Most people who call us lead with a room. The kitchen is cramped and dark. The primary bathroom has not been touched since 1997. The laundry room makes them feel vaguely defeated every time they walk into it.

That is a completely reasonable place to start. But in our experience, the room is usually the surface of something bigger. Underneath the specific complaint about the kitchen layout or the bathroom tile is a person who wants to feel differently in their home. More comfortable. More proud of it. More at ease in the mornings, more energized when they cook, more relaxed when the day is finally over. The room is the trigger. The desire is bigger than the room.

What a Designer Hears When They Really Listen

We have been working with Ann Arbor homeowners since 2004. Long enough to notice that the clients whose projects turn out best are not always the ones who came in with the clearest idea of what they wanted. Sometimes the ones who say "I just know something needs to change" end up with the most transformative results, because a good designer can hear what is underneath that and help give it shape.

A homeowner who says she wants a new kitchen is also often a person who hosts family dinners that mean everything to her but feels embarrassed by the space she is hosting them in. Couples who want to redo the primary bathroom are sometimes two people who have been quietly tolerating a space that doesn’t reflect who they have become in their home. A family asking about the laundry room might be a household that is exhausted by the friction of daily life and looking for a space that finally works the way they need it to.

When you hear those things underneath the surface request, a kitchen remodel can become something more. Not necessarily larger in scope, though sometimes it is, but more coherent. More intentional. Designed around a life, not just a room.

What Design-Build Makes Possible

The reason this kind of listening leads anywhere useful is because we handle both design and construction. We are not a design firm that hands you drawings and sends you out to find a contractor. We are not a contractor who executes someone else's vision. The same team that sits with you and understands what you are really after is the team that builds it.

That integration matters enormously when a project touches more than one space. A kitchen and a connecting dining room that share a design language. A primary bathroom and a laundry room on the same floor that feel like they belong to the same home. A mudroom entry that picks up where the kitchen leaves off and gives every person in the household a place to land when they walk in the door. These things do not happen by accident. They happen because someone is holding the whole picture throughout the entire project.

The Spaces We Work On

We are known for kitchens and bathrooms because that is where most remodeling conversations begin, and we do that work at a level we are proud of. But the scope of what we take on is broader than the name suggests.

We work on laundry rooms, mudrooms, home offices, wet bars, beverage stations, basement living spaces, and whole-floor transformations. Some of our most meaningful projects have been ones where a client came in asking about a kitchen and left with a vision for how their entire main floor could work better, not because we talked them into more, but because once they started describing what they actually wanted, it turned out the kitchen was only part of the answer.

If you are starting with a kitchen, our 2026 kitchen design trends post and Ann Arbor kitchen remodel cost guide are good places to orient yourself. Starting with a bathroom, our 2026 bathroom design trends post and Ann Arbor bathroom remodel cost guide cover the same ground. And if you are wondering whether you even need to keep that tub in the primary bathroom, we wrote about that too in our tub vs. shower guide.

What We Are Actually Trying to Do

DreamMaker Bath and Kitchen was built on a simple idea we have never outgrown: we are here to build great relationships in service of enhancing the lives of the people we work with. The remodeling is just the vehicle; the life you live in the finished space is the point.

That means we care whether you still love the kitchen in ten years. Whether the primary bathroom actually changed how the mornings feel. Whether the mudroom solved the chaos or just moved it around. Whether the whole project, from the first conversation to the final walkthrough, felt like working with people who were on your side the entire time.

We work with homeowners across Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities including Dexter, South Lyon, Brighton, Northville, and Plymouth.

If you are at the beginning of thinking about what your home could be, whether the idea is clear or just a feeling, we would love to hear about it. That conversation is always free and always worth having.
