There are a lot of ways to remodel a home, in terms of how much time and effort you can put in, versus the resources that are available.
Determining what remodeling method is best for your family is an important first step. The four main ways to accomplish a remodel are Do It Yourself, Self-Contracting, General Contracting, and Design/Build.

Do you feel confident enough to self-contract, or act as your own general contractor?

Either of these is a good choice when you’re OK with doing your own design and materials selections, but not the construction.

The main difference between the two contracting choices is who will hire and supervise the tradespeople who do the construction (you, or a project manager), and who manages the permits/insurance/inspections (you, or a project manager).

A design/build option is for you, if you are limited by time or your experience in remodeling, or you simply would rather have someone else take care of everything.

It’s a good way to get the project done more quickly.

You select colors and materials, but with some guidance.

Other people deal with any issues that arise: design, engineering needs, materials, trades scheduling, permits, and inspections.

The chart above compares each of the building methods in terms of responsibility.

The chart below compares cost, time, timeframe, and the potential for “scope creep.”

Which ones match up best for you and your family?

What are some other things to consider before you remodel?

Which room (or rooms) need to be done?

What is most important to me before we remodel?

Will I regret it if I don’t do this?

Before you embark on a remodel, take a look at your available free time, vs. your skill set, and compare that to your budget to determine what remodeling method fits you best.

If you’re still not sure which one would work for you, give DreamMaker a call, and we’ll be happy to walk you through it!
